Paste or type your text and see the number of words, characters, sentences and paragraphs right away. You can also check it against a limit, like 280 characters for a post or 500 words for an essay. Your text stays on your device.

What this tool does

It counts your text while you type. Words are anything between spaces. Characters are every letter, number, space and sign. Sentences end with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Paragraphs are blocks of text with an empty line between them. It also shows the words you use most, so you can spot when you repeat yourself.

When you need it

How to use it

  1. Paste your text into the box, or start typing.
  2. Read the numbers under the box. They update with every key.
  3. If you have a limit, pick it under Check a limit. The bar turns red when you go over.
  4. Tap Copy text when you are done.

Reading the result

Characters counts spaces too. Most forms and social apps count this way. Without spaces is what some translators and printers charge for. Reading time uses about 200 words per minute, a normal silent reading speed. Speaking time uses about 130 words per minute, a calm speaking pace. These are averages — a slow or nervous speaker will take longer.

What this tool cannot do

Your text stays on your device

All counting happens in your browser. The text is not sent to a server and not stored anywhere. That is useful for private letters, job applications and unpublished work.

Questions people ask

Are spaces counted as characters?

Yes, in the main character count. The box "Without spaces" shows the number without them.

How many words is one page?

Roughly 250 to 300 words for a normal A4 page with 12-point text and single spacing. Double spacing halves that.

Is there a limit to how much text I can paste?

No fixed limit. Even a long thesis works, though a very old phone may get slow.

Does it work in German and other languages?

Yes. Umlauts, accents and other alphabets are counted correctly.
